QUESTION: how to set  appropriate spring to appropriate cable to activate push rod for forward motion and therefore set first/second speed of a Honda 312 selfpropelling mower.

ANSWER: Most os the adjustments are covered in your owner's manual.  Have you checked your manual?

QUESTION: Thanks Eric Info. OHV HondA hr 214 easy start GV 120-118cm
Cables  no. 54510-VB5-800   and  54520-VA3-801 which are for 2 speed selector and drive (push bar) But I don't know which one is which.  Unfortunately I do not have a manual.  Many thanks for your assistance.  Kevin

SHIFT Lever Free Play (Self-propelled type only)
1. Measure free play at the tip of the lever, it should bc I -3 nut (3/64-l/8 in).
2. If adjustment is necessary, loosen the lock nuts and turn them to run the adjuster up or down as required. Tifiten the lock nuts and recheck free play.
3. Start the engine and operate the shift fever. Check for smooth transmission engagement.
CAUTION:
Never shift the transmission while self-propelling.
