Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Engine swap, craftsman lawn tractor, briggs stratton

I have a Craftsman lawn tractor (approximately 5 years old) that has a 17 HP Kohler engine (model CV490, type 27508).  The head is cracked on the engine and needs to be replaced.  We haven't had the best luck with the Kohler engine and would like to swap it for a Briggs & Stratton.  Is there a way to determine what a compatible B&S engine part number would be?  Thanks for your help!  Nancy

Most Briggs engine's, around the same horsepower, will be compatable.  You will have to wire the Briggs charging system but Briggs has literature to help with wiring.
