QuestionPaul, My question pertains to a Craftsman Riding lawn mower (Model #:917258522 with a B%26S 15.5 HPOHV engine (model #28N707). When I attempt to start the mower, the sprocket on top of the starter spins, but does not spring up to engage the larger sprocket. When I jump start directly from the battery, I get the same result. I tried to jump start from a car, but nothing happened, not even a spark. I must not be doing this correctly. Battery tested OK at a parts store and the starter tested OK (i.e.,the sprocket spun and sprung up to the correct position). Any ideas? Thanks much for your help. Eric

ARE YOU SURE YOU HAVE BATTERY POSITIVE CONNECTED TO STARTER TERMINAL AND NEGATIVE TO GOUND
IF YOU HAVE THIS COUPLED UP WRONG IE BATTERY IN THE WRONG WAY STARTER WILL TURN BACKWARDS ANS STARTER CLUTCH WILL NOT ENGAGE HAVE SEEN IT BEFORE CHECK THAT YOU HAVE BATTERY IN THE CORRECT WAY AROUND ? STARTER MOTOR SHOULD SPIN ANTICLOCKWISE AS ENGINE RING GEAR/FLYWHEEL TURNS CLOCKWISE
HAS THE STARTER MOTOR BEEN APART AT ALL
IS THE S/M PINION AND HELIX IN GOOD CONDITION , DOES THIS STARTER CLUTCH HAVE A ROLL PIN THROUGH THE SHAFT RETAINING STARTER CLUTCH ?
CHEERS LET ME KNOW IF ITS THE BATTERY ?
