Questionwhile mowing this fall, I was going forward and reverse frequently to get an awkward section of lawn done.... suddenly when I tried to put into forward, there was smoke. turned mower off. it won't go forward or backward, but when you press pedal it sounds like it is trying to engage. we have established it is not the transmission, but any clue what it is or how to fix it?

almost sounds like the trans drive belt has come off / jammed and has got damaged
check make sure the trans drive tensioner arm pulley has not worn out and that the tensioner is placing tension on belt ?
did the belt squeel then did you smell burning rubber ?
the other belt is at the other end of trans and is a short one
it goes around the trans pulley and a vaiator pulley and has a tensioner on it as well
check for / worn/ slipping damaged / jammed belts / pulleys
check for foreign objects in / around area of belts / pulleys
have a look under tractor - for anything obvious
can you give me more info
is unit hydro or gear unit with 2 speed trans with variator pulley belt system
what size is deck and what sise and make & model / type number engine is
this is usually on engine covers
