QuestionI have a 20Hp motor on my John Deere lawn tractor. It will not start - it has little or no compression and does not seem to be getting gas. Where should I begin to check?
AnswerHI CAN YOU LET ME KNOW WHAT MODEL JOHN DEERE TRACTOR IS ?
AND WHAT MODEL AND TYPE NUMBERS OFF THE ENGINE ARE
AND ENGINE BRAND BRIGGS VANGUARD,OHV SINGLE OR TWIN , KOHLER CV , KAWASAKI
BUT IF YOU SUSPECT COMPRESSION IS LOW START WITH OIL LEVEL CHECK LEVEL AND CONDITION ?, THEN CHECK COMPRESSION , IF LOWISH , THEN CHECK FOR TIGHT VALVE CLEARANCE - LOOSEN CLEARANCE IF TIGHT AS TEST ONLY RECHECK COMPRESSION TEST IF COMPRESSION NOW UP TO NORMAL -TIGHT VALVE CLEARANCE BUT IF STILL LOW POUR IN SOME 30 WEIGHT MOTOR OIL INTO COMBUSTION CHAMBER NEAR TDC COMPRESSION STROKE LEAVE FOR FEW MINUTES AND RETEST FOR COMPRESSION IF COMPRESSION NOW BETTER - POSSIBLE WORN RINGS , BUT IF NO BETTER THAN BEFORE OIL INTRODUCED LEAKING OR BURND IN /EX VALVES OR BLOWEN HEAD GASKET ARE INDICATED
DOES UNIT HAVE GOOD SPARK ? AND WILL ENGINE RUN IF FUEL STRAIGHT INTO COMUSTION CHAMBER , AND THEN INTO CARB THROAT ?
IF BOTH TIMES ENGINE RUNS ON THE PRIME YOU PUT IN THEN FUEL PROBLEM EXSISTS ETHER FUEL PUMP OR FLOW OR CARB BLOCKAGE RESTRICTION MIGHT WANT TO CLEAN OUT CARBY
PAY TO CHECK OUT BASICS 1ST
REMEMBER F A C T S
F = FUEL IN RIGHT PROPORTIONS
A = AIR
C = COMPRESSION ENOUGH TO RUN PROPERLY
T = TIMMING
S = SPARK CONSISTANT AND AT RIGHT TIME
ALL BEING = ENGINE SHOULD RUN IF ALL 5 ARE MEET
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU FIND
