QuestionI'm having starting problems. Upon turning the switch, only a brief grind, with no engine turnover. Battery checks out, starter checks out, fuse is OK, I replaced solenoid. Same problem exists.
Poulan dealer can't get to unit for over a week, and suggest adjusting valves, which I will do. How do you make sure engine is "top dead center", and how do I identify intake/exhaust valves.
Thanks so much for your help.

Answerhi chuck
have you tried a battery positive to starter motor terminal bypass wire ( ie starter cable ) from car jump cable set )
is battery fully charged and all cables/ connection clean and tight and does machine have good battery earth connections and no excessive resistance
does the unit sound or act like its come up against alot of compression resistance ?
inlet valves are usually the ones that that are closest to inlet manifold
but not allways just to confuse you more laugh laugh
as in the case of b/s vangaurd single cylinder there inlet valves are on the bottom side beside muffler and exhaust is on the top side because they use reverse cross flow heads
may be the decompressor is not working correctly ?
try removing valve rocker cover( s) remove plug(s) and rotate 1st cylinder while watching the intake valve open then close ,then continue turning until piston is at tdc ( use a small screw driver in the plug hole while rotating to tdc it will stop at its highest point ) then rotate the piston down the bore on power stroke 1/4 inch or 6.35 mm and set the valve clearnace on intake to 0.003" and exaust to 0.005" @ this point only with feeler gauges, and tighten loc nuts making sure not to move the setting you just make
repeat this proceedure for the other cylinder if it is a vee twin cylinder
if a vee twin number 1 cylinder is the one that is closest to the flywheel
if you look at engine from the front ( if v twin you will see that 1 cylinder is set higher than the other ) the highest one is the closest to the flywheel & is number one
cheers paul hope this helps
