Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs I/C 20 hp engine, hp engine, minor mods

Im wondering if an I/C 20 hp engine would be a sufficient replacement for an intek 24 hp on my husqvarna 24/48.Also, would this be a direct swap?

the engine may very well couple in ok to exsisting loom and controls with minor mods  

i would say no because the manfacturer spec'd that size engine for that size deck  and for it to have a little left in reserve when under cutting load and allowing for losses from tempreture , etc

horsepower relates to how fast work can be done ( ie how fast it can move through grass )

torque relates to a engines ability to do work  

if either horsepower or torque are too low  given the load on engine  engine output may not be sustained at optimum peak  power at rev   and will work  quite hard and wear out faster .

but the decision is yours
