QuestionWhere do I find the model# and type on an old B&S 8HP horizontal engine?
AnswerHere are a couple of links:
http://engines.myfaqcenter.com/Answer.aspx?p_faqid=13&body_0$tbKeyword=model number
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/BS_modeltypecode.pdf
The links do not cover old engines. However, almost every old Briggs had the model number stamped somewhere on the enging shroud.
The antique engine websites can help with the really old engines.

Depending on the age of the engine, the first two digits of the model number should be 19, indicating a 19 cubic inch block, which is usually rated at 8HP.
Let me know if this helps.
