Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): govenor spring assembly model 40777, briggs and stratton, hp briggs

Its a 19 hp briggs and  stratton. I have an issue when i start mower hangs wide open.   Enough so if I dont shut it off it will blow the motor. So i Assumed the govenor springs were shot got two new springs. Need a diagram because i think it may take three springs. The parts person told me it depended on the manufatures roll out date which i cant find anywhere. bought all three springs. HELP Please.....

Kathy,  I am afraid I have some very bad news for you.  I dont think it is the gov spring, but the gov gear itself which is located inside of the engine.

Go to www.briggsandstratton.com and purchase a service manual for your engine.  It will have very good illustrations in it.
