Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): starting problem, engine model type, tractor model

I have a 18hp poulan riding tractor model #Pr1842STC it has two problems. first problem after shutting off the tractor it will not start again until i turn the engine backwards second when it idles the rpm's go up and down can you help

How old is the tractor?  For the idle, the most likely problem is a dirty carburetor...very common these days.

How old is the battery?  Have you dis-connected the battery and cleaned the battery posts and cable ends with a wirebrush?  Want to make sure the connection is solid and clean.
