Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): sears tiller squeal, front tine tiller, hp engine
QuestionI have an old sears front tine tiller model 917.297550, 5 hp engine. I recently replace the belt due to a squealling noise from the tiller. The tines turn slowing and when I engage the tines into dirt, the tines stop and you hear a squealling noise. Pls. advise what this might be. I never had trouble before with this tiller. Its at least 30 yrs old.
AnswerThat god awful squealing sound that your hearing is coming from a belt sliding across the pulley. One of your pulleys are not turning freely. Perhaps there is a rock stuck in the tines? perhaps a gear in the tranny is locking up? you must find the cause of this or you will ruin your new belt.
