Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawnmower pullstring will not wind, pulley, figure 8

I put a new pullstring on the lawnmower, everything went back in the way it came out but i dont remember which way to wind string.  I've tried both ways and the pull string wont wind itself back up.  What's wrong?

Hello Jordan, the rope should be cut to a length of 4 to 5 feet so it can wind around the pulley 4 to 5 times and still have around 6 inches left for space between the pulley and the t-handle. When making the knot try making a figure 8. Also make checks below the rope rewind system. spring & keeper. pawls, etc. If you can get a manual try getting a manual.
