HI, I have a Craftsman Lawn Tractor 917270810. I was getting it ready for the season and battery was dead. Changed battery out but ameter is showing a negative reading while engine is running. Alternator/ Regulator ? And if so where is it located ?

Click on "Engine/Alternator Replacement Guide".  Good details on charging systems.

Did you clean the battery connections, the battery posts and cable ends, with a wirebrush before connecting the new battery?
Was the new battery fully charged when you installed it?  Has a mouse chewed through a wire?

If you have a regulator, it will me mounted on the engine.
