Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawnmower stuck in gear, gears, worries

I have a 14.5hp murray mower the thing is in first gear the shifter will move but it always stays in first gear.It was given to me and i don't think there is much of a problem but i have little experience please easy my worries

Odds are this manual will cover the transmission you have.  Let me know if the link helps.

Depending on your transmission, if you have the type with shift pins I'm guessing they are either broke or stuck in the shaft.  Can you shift gears with the engine turned off?
