QuestionWhen I tried to start my mower this year, I hear a clicking. When I checked the engine negative battery cable insulation had melted off. Any suggestions as to what may have caused this?
Thank you,
Chris
AnswerHello Chris:
>>There can be Several Reasons for this;
1->>The Charger is Overcharging the Battery. this can be Either the Stator/Charging Coils or the Voltage Regulator.
2->>There is Oil/Dirt Under the Engine Mounts and this is Causing a Bad Engine Ground. I Attach an 8 Gauge Wire from the Engine to the Frame to Prevent having a Problem with the Engine Ground.
3->>A Bad Battery
4->>Battery Cables too Small and they cannot Properly Carry the Current Required to Start the Engine. I Use Automotive Battery Cables on All my Equipment and have Very Few Problems with my Starters or Stators/Charging Coils.
5->>A Bad Starter. If the Starter is Slow About Turning the Engine through a Complete Turn of the Engine Cycle, then the Starter is Dragging and Requires Replacing or Rebuilding.
6->>the Valve Clearance Require Setting. If the Engine is Slow in Turning or Turns for 3/4 Turn and then Slows and Repeats this Process, then the Valve Clearances Require Setting.
