Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Oil,and plugs, john deere l130, west virginia usa

I have a Scotts S2348(john deere) and a John Deere L130 with a 23 hp-48" cutting deck.They both have the same Kohler motors in them.
Can I use synthetic oil in them and which would you recommend?Can I also use Platinum spark plugs in them?
I would appreciate your info.Thanks-Don
