QuestionI have a 18 HP Briggs & Stratton model # 422777 and I have gone thru 2
batteries, and I was told that the starter was the same as the alternator but I
don't think that is true. Where is the alternator and is there anything else that
charges the battery.
AnswerHello Jason,
The alternator is a crucial part of the electrical system in your small engine. The alternator creates a moving magnetic field to induce current. The alternator functions similarly to the generator on your old bicycle wheel, which continued to provide the electricity so you would have a light as long as your bike's wheel kept turning [or the engine crankshaft] was revolving.
So, that being said, should your alternator malfunction, this could and usually does affect the functioning of your battery. In the case of your auto, a defective alternator can result in a dead [completely shot] battery, and in a lot of cases you need to replace both.
The alternator should be attached [by wires] to the battery, but since I don't have a copy of your manual, I wouldn't be able to positively locate the alternator. I would recommend contacting Briggs & Stratton.
