QuestionHi! My father-in-law has a John Deere mower. It is not a newer model John Deere. When we went to start it up the other morning, the only way it would run was if the choke was pulled all the way out. Later it wouldn't run at all. What could be the problem and a solution. Thanks!
AnswerDepending on the age and model, I would suspect the carburetor or fuel pump. I would start with the carburetor.
Before dis-assembling any parts I would make sure the fuel is less than 30 days old. That is make sure the gas is new.
If you remove the air filter and spray starting fluid directly in the carb the engine should start. If it starts then you know the ignition, compression and timing are fine. This leaves the fuel system, most likely the carb.
