Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler command12.5 HP charging problem, voltage regulator, husqvarna

I bought this husqvarna lr 125 mower last week, guy told me something kept drawing battery dead, mower had set for 2 years, got new battery and got mower started when i shut mower off smoke was coming out from under flywheel, battery was hooked up right, no wires were rubbing or shorted that I could see, took alternator off and it was burnt, now is there supposed to be a diode in line with the alternator wires because there was a red wired just twisted in with the black wire for the alt and I was wondering if there is no diode if it could cause this?      The model # CV15S the engine serial # is 2507213504     The mower MFG # is 954001202B
