Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler engine in riding mower wont keep running, craftsman lt1000, spec numbers
QuestionI have a 2001 Craftsman lt1000 mower model 917-272070 with a Kohler 17hp cv490-27505 engine. It was running fine and then sat for about 6 weeks for winter. When I started using it again it ran about 5 minutes and then quit. I have since changed the spark plug and fuel filter and line. I have also removed the engine covers, and cleaned the engine. It continues to start and run for about 5 minutes before it quits. I checked for spark after it quit and found it doesn't have one. When it cools down the spark is back and it will run again until it warms up. I don't want to just start replacing parts. How do I go about finding out what needs replacing? Thanks.
AnswerHello Carolus:
From your Description it Sounds like the Ign Module/Coil is Bad. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model and Spec Numbers (CV490S-27505). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. Select the Electrical/Ignition File. This Engine has an Ign Coil (#21) in the Breakdown. It is Not Uncommon for this Component to Go Bad. I Suggest you Disconnect the Shut Off Wire from the Coil and Run the Engine. If it Continues to Run Well Past the 5 Minutes it Usually Does, then a Safety Switch May be Causing the Problem. If it Quits at the 5 Minute Time, then Replace the Ign Coil. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
Good Luck
