Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Deere STX 38 Mower, spur gear, fifth gear

The mower will go forward in the first four gears. Will not pull in fifth gear and will not back up. Will cut the lawn. What is the problem why the mower does not back up or not pull in fifth gear. How do I fix or repair mower?

From your Description, it Sounds like Either the Shifter is Out of Adjustment or a Spur Gear is Damaged Inside the Transaxle. The Transaxle will need to be Removed from the Mower, Disassembled and Inspected. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find.
