Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman mower trying to start backwards?, engine 143, flywheel
QuestionHello,
I have a Craftsman mower 944.368461 (Engine 143.996008) that is giving me problems when trying to start it. I have replaced the spark plug and air filter with new ones. What I get is when I pull on the pull starter, the engine sputters (like it's going to start) but the the pull start cord jerks back towards the engine out of my hand. I thought the pull start was sticking, so I tried replacing it but with no use. It seems like the engine is trying to run backwards but I can't be sure. Any ideas what it could be and how to fix it?
Thanks.
AnswerHello Jan:
There are Two Possible Causes. 1- The Blade is Loose. 2- The Flywheel Key is Damaged. Check them in the Order I Listed, Please. That is the Most Common Order of Occurrence. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
