QuestionMy Stihl 018 does not use enough chainsaw oil. It is about 5 years old, but only has about 10 hours of use. It uses 1 tank of oil for about 5 tanks of gas. Oil does not come off the tip of the bar when running. Here are my questions:
- what are the most likely causes?
- I have a new chain oil filter. How do I replace it?
- How do I verify the oil pump is working?
- Is replacing the oil pump straightforward for some one with above average mechanical ability?
Thanks for your help.

AnswerHello Joe:
With the Bar and Chain Removed, Start and Run the engine. Watch for Oil from the Oiler Port. I had the Same Problem with Every Stihl I Own. I Had to Drill the Oil Outlet Port with a Small Drill Bit and Enlarge the Port a Little Until I had the Oil Comsumption the Same as the Fuel Mix Consumption. 1 Tank of Oil Used with 1 Tank of Fuel Mix. I Tried Everything, Including Returning the First Saw 3 Times Due to Improper Oil to the Bar. I was Told the Oiler Port was Clogged. On a New Saw!! Once I Decide to Work on the Saw (even though it was Under Warranty) I Found the Oiler Port Could Not Supply Enough Oil and Required Enlarging. If you have an IPL, you should have No Problem Replacing the Oil Pump. However, I Do Not Believe the Pump is the Cause. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
Good Luck
