Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): magnetto wiring, briggs and stratton, magneto
QuestionI have a Murray riding mower #40627D. It has a Briggs engine #400707-1220101-91092512. Last year the shop told me I needed a magneto, but did.t have the money. I recently ordered one online and have installed it. My confusion is that it came with a two piece wire that has a female connection into which to the two wires come from. On the magneto is a male fitting for this wire to slip onto. My question is where do the two wires go? I think I remember one going to a bolt with slip connector that is in the engine cover. It appears not to be grounded, because the threaded fitting going through the metal is nylon. I also have a yellow wire coming from under the dash, maybe from the switch that i don't know where it connects. I have seen some wiring diagrams, but they refer to an alternator. Is that the same as a magneto? any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
AnswerHello Allen:
A Coil/Magneto has 2 Wires One is a Ground and the Other is Connected to the Engine Shut Off Wire. When Both Wires are Grounded the Coil/Magneto Doesn't Work. Which Magneto did you Purchase, Part #394988 or 394891? The 394891 has the Ignition Built in and the 394988 has an External Ignition. Go to this Addy, Please. http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the B. Then Select Briggs and Stratton. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Select the File #40. Then Select the 2nd Folder #400700. This is the Breakdown/IPL that I am Using for Reference. From your Description you described the Voltage Regulator. Can you Check the Breakdown/IPL and Let me know, Please. Hope this Helps. Thanks.
