Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Starter bendix on 11 hp lawn tractor, spring pin, engine flywheel

I have the plastic gear that engages the engine flywheel. The old one is mangled. I can't get the old one off. How do you remove the pin that is thru the shaft. There is what appears to be a clip thru the top of the shaft (longitudinally) that holds the pin. Once the pin is removed I can slide the old gar off and put the new one on. I can't get byond the pin! Frustrating. All to replace a $2.00 part

remove that clip  anywhich way  you can, by a pliers, or ???  that pin should be a spring pin. if not go to your local hardware store you can get one the size you need.
throw away that clip,  if you remove spring pin >via a punch remove gear and replace pin by punch, you do not need that stupid clip.
