Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): replacing john deere stx38 starter, john deere stx38, kohler engine

Hello

I am replacing the starter on a john deere stx38 mower (black deck). It has a kohler engine.  The starter number is 2509804.

I put the new one in today but when i turned it over, it spun but did not engage - though it did click against something on a couple of rotations?

Is there anything I need to do special when bolting it back up...

I appreciate any help.

 Hello Brett:

 You May have Gotten a Bad Starter. This Happens Quite Often. Check the Starter Drive and Ensure the Spring and Drive Gear Move Smoothly. I Suggest you Return the Starter. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.
