Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Mower not started for a few years, lawn mower, spark plug

Question
My next door neighbor gave me a 4 stroke rotay lawn mower and it has not been started for a few years. Before I pull the cord to start it, what steps should I perform?


Answer
Check the oil and remove the spark plug.  Pull the string to make sure the engine rotates.

Replace the plug and try using some starting fluid sprayed directly into the carb throat to see if the engine will start.

What brand of engine is on the mower?
