The starter rope broke and I've followed your very clear instructions on installing a new one.  It won't recoil; could the spring be broken?

Hi Lisa,

Yes, I would suspect the spring if no recoil action.  The spring usually breaks at one of the end tabs. If so, you will need to get a replacement spring and carefully wind that in, before re-assembling the rope reel.
