QuestionNo owners manual, but the model # is 42591x8B ; looks like it was
made in 1990. I was afraid the xmission might be at fault, but
wondered if it might be repaired. The engine seems good; is it worth a
new xmission, or is one even available? Many thanks in advance.

Hi Eric
This question concerns a 17 hp Murray lawn tractor about 12
years old. The engine runs fine, but after mowing for a while, it
is very sluggish in responding to the foot pedal, forward or
reverse. If I idle down just a bit, and retract the cutter, it will
move on. Sometimes I can feel a shudder, or vibration, as it pulls
in a turn--indeed it seems most susceptable to this problem in a
turn. The drive belt to the transmission seems tight enough; the
transmission pulley seems to spin at a constant rate the whole
time. Any ideas would be appreciated, Thanks

The tranmission may be going out. I'm assuming you have a
hydrostat/automatic transmission. The earlier model hydros were
sealed and not servicable. One thing you might check are the
mounting bolts...we find loose mounting bolts once in a while.
Do you have an owners manual or a tractor model number?
Let me know.

AnswerThe early hydros were not servicable but by now there may be a xmission shop that repairs them. We rarely find bad units, but most of the tractors we see are late models, not more than 5 years old.
It is possible there is an adjustment on the pedal but I don't know off the top of my head. I know Snapper, John Deere, Toro and several other models have replacable filters and adjustments. I'm pretty sure yours does not have an external filter but I would check just in case.
Have you checked any other messages boards? Were the mounting bolts tight?
Let me know.
