QuestionI purchased a used Sears Craftsman lawn tractor (doesn't start, no click, nothing, has charge on battery.) The previous owner said it needed a solenoid & starter, but is in good shape otherwise. I was trying to locate info on "how-to" replace the starter and what starter to buy (would prefer not to pay full price ay SEARS!)
Here are the particulars:
> Tractor Model:LT 12 HP Electric Start 38" mower
> Model #: 917.254244
> Purchase Date: 1988
> Engine: Tecumseh - model # 143.386012
Thanks for your help in finding the correct starter, and a how-to for a reasonable price.
Kind Regards,
John Oldham
AnswerWe rarely find bad starters or solenoids. Most of the time the problem is caused by a safety switch or bad wire. I used to find bad solenoids, but it has been many years since I replaced one.
Do you have a voltmeter or a 12 volt test light?
Can you find the safety switches? Deck/blades, clutch/transmission and seat switch; just look for and followe the wires.
Let me know.
