Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): weed eater tune up, exhaust ports, reference points
QuestionMichael,
Today, I tried to bring back to life an old weed eater (model GTI 19) that had been bogging down on me till I gave up on it about two years ago. I've been able to start and run the trimmer after cleaning out the exhaust ports. However, I know I messed up the mixture and idle settings....while trying to resolve a problem with full throttle speed. It seems that the weed eater will not hold power when a "load" is applied (i.e. trimming grass). Also, looks like the trimmer runs better with partial choke settings. To make a long story short, I need help trying to reset the mixture reference points for this trimmer. I could probably "tweak" the settings after I know were to start from!!! Any help you can give me to work this problems out at this time would be awesome! If you have any flying questions, I would be glad to help you with. Thanks for volunteering. Enrique.
AnswerHi Enrique,
The high speed mixture screw is set at 1 & 1/2 turns out and the low speed screw, set at 3/4 turn out. The spark screen and muffler should be clean too. If still no power under a load, then the piston or rings may be worn causing low compression.
Good Luck,
Michael
