Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 5 HP Tecumseh Sowblower engine, air leak, flow path

When I prime the engine, gas runs out all around and from in the carb.  The flow of gas stops when I remove the priming tube from the carb.  The engine runs, even when dumping gas.  What's wrong?

Hi Ken,

You will need to trace the primer flow path and look for a check valve or an air leak.  If I remember, the primer pushes air into the carb, which draws fuel into the throat.  I'm not familiar with your exact carb model so I can't pinpoint where to look.  If that checks out but no difference, then I would look at the float and its' needle and seat for a problem but that would leak all the time if not correct.
