Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): short blocks, crank shaft, piston
QuestionI had something go thru my B&S 12.5 engine. Someone said I might be able to just purchase a short block, this comes with piston and crank shaft etc and all I had to do was to put all my parts on it. Is this true and how much would something like this cost. I priced a new engine and it was $624.00 for $200.00 more I can buy a new mower. Thank you
AnswerIt has been a long time since we sold a short block, but they cost about half as much as a new engine...around $300.
Depending on what brand of tractor you have,it's age and replacement cost, it may be better to purchase a new tractor. We normally will not replace an engine or short block unless the tractor cost over $2000. Most Murrays, Craftsman and MTD mowers cost less than $1500 new which doesn't make sense to replace an engine on an older unit.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
