Is there a special tool available to accomplish this or can I use a plain old flat file?

You can use hand file but it may take a while to sharpen the blade.  We have an actual blade grinding machine we use in the shop but most shops/people just use a regular grinder.

The hand file is a great idea if you sharpen blade often but I'd use some type of a machine if the blade hasn't been sharpened for a while.
