QuestionI have a Craftman mower that I hit a piece of pipe and the motor stopped. The mower has spark and compression. The blade seems to turn to turn by hand without and trouble or noise, however I can pull and pull and not even get a pop like it whats to start except a few times and the pull cord snapped back like a kick back. Is it possible that it kick out of time and if so How can I reset it
Thanks in advance
Tim
AnswerYou will have to replace the flywheel key; this is very common when the blade hits a solid object.
The blower shroud, the top metal cover on the engine, needs to be remove first. This will expose the flywheel. You will need a strap wrench and ratchet/socket to remove the flywheel nut; an impact gun works better. Once the flywheel nut is removed, you will need a puller to remove the flywheel. Once the flywheel is off you can replace the key.
I would also check for a bent blade and the blade adapter. The blade adapter also has a key of some type, usually steel. Normally they will not shear, but I would still check.
NOTE: When installing the flywheel, have a buddy or use a string to hold the engine shut-off lever. Engaging the lever pulles the flywheel brake back to allow the flywheel to be installed.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
