Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): loud squealing, briggs and stratton, starter clutch

pullcord gets tangled. untangled cord and tightened spring still a lot of squealing is there any  way to stop the squealing ?
murray 22 briggs and stratton 3 hp  not sure of year just bought lawnmower today  used

You need to replace the starter clutch.  If you have seen the recoil rope get tangled, etc., the recoil may also be damaged.  I recommend you take it to a good shop to have the clutch replaced and the recoil inspected.  This is not an expensive repair.  Hope this helps.
