QuestionMarc,
Thanks for your prompt reply.
I do not see a spark arcing when I remove the plug wire.
Is it possible to upgrade the ignition to a modern system? I've got to weigh the cost of points and condensors as well as possibly buying a new coil against upgrading the ignition. I have the mechanical ability to make the repairs myself.
Thanks,
Kenny

I just purchased a Little Wonder edger (circa 1975) with the original 3hp B&S motor from an elderly gentleman who had bought it new. It started on the first pull and hummed like a Mercedes, so I gave him $50 and took it home.
The next day, I started it again. It ran for about 2 minutes, screeched loudly and died. I determined the screeching was from the starter clutch and replaced it with a new one. However, it still will not start.
I have turned the crank with a 22mm socket on an electric drill and am getting no ignition. I am wondering if it is not getting a spark. How do I trouble-shoot this particular problem? It seems to use a magneto-coil to generate the spark.
Thanks very much. I look forward to your response.

If it is a 1975 model, it will have a points ignition. It would be wise to change the points and condensor and have the coil tested at a shop. Replacing points and condensor is almost a regular maintenance routine. If everything is working correctly, the spark should be able to jump a 1/8" gap to ground. Hope this helps.
AnswerBriggs & Stratton used to sell a retrofit electronic ignition pickup that snaps on to the coil and eliminates the need for the points. This kit included a block-off plug for the points plunger as well. I just checked the Briggs & Stratton website and the still sell it. It's called a Magnetron Ignition Kit - 5025. Copy and paste the following link in brackets into your address bar (http://shop.briggsandstratton.com/BShopProductPage.asp?CatalogID=56B2B9A0-283C-1) Hope this helps.
