Snowmobile Repair: engine, kotzebue alaska, oversized pistons
QuestionI am rebuilding my 1997 Arctic Cat Bearcat 440 engine. My readings of the cylinders gives me about 12 to 15 thousandths clearance between the new pistons and the honed cylinders. I am concerned that there is too much room in there to get a quiet sounding engine when it is put back together. Seeing that it is virtually impossible to get any information these days, even in the manuals from Arctic and others, I need to get it right. I have rebuilt quite a few, but moltly minor wear inside the jugs, those came out ok, but they miked out much less than this one. I want to know if I should send it out for sleves and oversized pistons, or take a chance on it being ok as it is. Can you help me out here with some solid information on what the correct clearance is supposed to be for this engine? I apperciate any advice that you can give.. thanks
Sincerely, Rob

AnswerHello Rob,
To be honest, it is very hard to come across that information. I understand your concern with the clearance. What you will need to do to get accurate information is go to this page, http://www.arcticcatdealers.com/ , and find your local dealer. From there, you can email or call them to get the specifications. I am sorry I couldn't help you directly. Let me know if you have any other questions, and I will be glad to help you. Good luck with the sled! --Arcticatman
