Steering Column Repair: 3 speed column shifter, chevy custom, shift linkage

I just bought a 77 Chevy Custom Deluxe 10. Last night I was driving and I couldn't get it out of 3rd. The column shift just moves around loosely. What to do?

Hi Mike:

Most of the time the problem is in the shift linkage at the bottom of the steering column.  They wear and jam easily.  The repair for this problem was to replace the inner shift tube and the lower shift arms.  I'm not sure if parts are still available for that or if you will need to find them through an aftermarket supplier.
Temporarily, you will need to carry a large screwdriver to unjam the lever whenever they lock up
