Steering Column Repair: shifter on column, broken rack, gmc van

QUESTION: i turned my key on and started my van when i shifted it stuck between gears and when i shut it off i cant get my key out or restartit again.it wont shift at all now.

Before we can go any further, I need to know the year, make & model of your vehicle and if it is a floor or column shift, standard or automatic.

gm tilt column   Hi Steven:
It sounds like a broken rack actuator rod.  This is the rod that goes from the gears that the key turns down to the ignition switch mounted lower on the column.  I can attach a blowup of the repair, but this is a complete overhaul and only an experienced mechanic will be able to take this all apart and put it back together.  This is not a step by step repair to attempt yourself (even with pictures).  The part that I believe broke and caused both problems is the last part on the upper left picture called 'actuator rod)
