Steering Column Repair: 73 corvette Tele/Tilt Steering Column, frank zane, tilt steering

Jay,
 I have a 73 roadster and when I went to lower the tilt steering wheel I heard a "snap" and the tilt would no longer rotate fully in to the down position AND the (automatic) shifer was very stiff when trying to go from park to drive and back to park.  
 I am not sure where to start in diagnosiing and fixing the problem.
 Do you have any recommendations?

Hello Frank,
I would suggest you remove and rebuild the column. I can't tell you exactly what broke because there are several parts in there that can sound how you describe and cause shifting problems. Before you buy parts though, you may want to make a checklist of all the parts you will need. Not all parts are readily available for these columns.
