Steering Column Repair: 1991 GMC Tilt Steering Fix, gmc pickup, tilt steering
QuestionThe problem began with the standard loose tilt steering column on a 1991 GMC pickup but has now escalated to also include a problem with the ignition switch "Rack" and the ignition switch "Actuator". They don't stay engaged when I reassemble the column; they, somehow, turn loose of each other. I've had this thing apart, and back together six times. A guy at the dealer says the "Actuator" gets rounded off; it is!
I have now purchased a new "Actuator" and "Rack Kit" (not cheap) but I can't find anything that tells how to remove the "Actuator" and install the new one. Apparently the rod attaches to a switch at the bottom of the column. HELP; this is very frustrating.
Thanks,
"Butch" Self
AnswerHere is a link to a diagram of the actuator and sector gear and how they correspond to one another. It is a bit tricky to keep everything in alignment when reassembling it. The best advice I can offer is to make sure there are no parts bent and everything in aligned when in position.

I hope that helps and let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Have a great day!
