Steering Column Repair: Rack and pinion, dodge neon sxt, 2003 dodge neon sxt

HELP!

I went to MIDAS today and unsure whether I am being taken for a ride.  Have an estimate for: 2 tires for my 2003 Dodge Neon SXT, alignment, and rack/pinion repair - to the tune of $1000 or so.  Is this too much?

They (MIDAS) said my power steering fluid was barely there and they were shocked I was able to drive (steer) at all.  They put some in (told me they actually should not have done that as it could them into trouble)  

I ALSO shelled out $400 for brake work today. (rotars, shoes etc)

stay away from thoes bandits .
They just want your good hard earned money.
Go to another shop the price of the rack is 60 dollors and the labor in my shop is 350 installed.
Tires are up to u how much you want to spend
