Steering Column Repair: Lost / replacing an ignition key, volkswagen type 1, superbeetle

I have a '72 Superbeetle Volkswagen (type 1 1600cc) I will be rebuilding with my daughter but have misplaced the ignition key.  Can I get a replacement since I know the VIN number?  Any other ideas besides reworking the steering column?

Hi,

Because of its vintage you will most likely not be able to get a keyfrom the VIN and even if you could 33 years gives the opportunity of the key and lock being replaced since new. The cheapest and easiestway to get a key made for this lock is to inguire to your local automotive locksmith. Even if key blanks are not available he/ she will be your best bet.
