Subaru Repair: 98 outback 95000 miles, head gasket, dealer ship

I have been diagnosed with leaky head gasket - with intermittent overheating - replaced water pump - car overheated on way home- question is Do I do this repair? I have read horror stories about other Outbacks with this Phase 1 engine- will it blow on me again - I hate to throw 2000 at a crap engine

at 2000.00 you are getting taken to the cleaners.  This job should run you about 1100.00 or maybe a little more.  Be sure to use Genuine parts.  Have your heads checked by a machine shop for warpage, and cracks.  You can often find a good Subaru mechanic in any town not in a Dealer ship.
