Towing Issues: Towing Regulations, dot numbers, answer area

I live in Indianapolis Indiana. I have a truck with what is called a sneaker-lift. The entire unti is mounted under the truck. Do I still have to register and get a dot number?

They have a section there which has a question and answer area on DOT numbers and from what I understand you can even take a bit of a test and see if you need DOT numbers..

But generally if you are over 10,000 pounds GVW, travel over 100 air miles, are a commercial vehicle, you need numbers...

And then add in the Indiana State DMV rules, and you might need to do something different...

And then repo companies generally have to be registered with the state and have special numbers displayed on the truck.

I wish I could provide a "YES or NO" answer but its not really possible to do that on questions like this.  To many variables.
