Towing Issues: Bumper tow U-Haul trailer, u haul trailers, chevy silverado
QuestionWe have a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 manual transmission truck w/a tow bumper. We are moving & wanted to haul a large trailer from U-Haul. The capacity for the large trailer is 3500 lbs. I noticed in other questions, you mentioned the bumper being stamped for 3500 lbs. Where would that be stamped? U-Haul is only letting us tow a 6x8 trailer because we can't prove the towing capacity of the tow bumper. It isn't in th e manual & we called Chevrolet & they couldn't give us an answer. Of course we are moving tomorrow, so it would be great to get an answer before then.
AnswerI don't remember ever talking about the capacity of a bumper for towing, but 3500 pounds sounds like about the max that I would recommend.
If it is stamped on it, it would be around the license plate area.
Also remember that if the CAPACITY of a trailer is 3500 pounds that the total weight including the trailer could well be over 5000 pounds. U-haul trailers are not all that light.
