QuestionI have a 1998 Dodge Intrepid ES 3.2L that i just put a trailer hitch on, to tow my two dirtbikes. I was wondering what is the maximum weight that my car can tow?
AnswerYou should check your owners manual to be sure, or contact a Dodge dealer, but the Edmunds.com web site has good specification info on any car, and they list the towing capacity for your car at 2000 pounds. Pretty good for a FWD sedan. That should be enough unless you have a trailer made of lead!
Anytime you tow with a FWD automatic vehicle, I recommend that you put on an auxilliary transmission cooler. Doesn't need to be a huge one, and they aren't really expensive, but if it is a car you plan on keeping, and if you are going to tow over much distance and especially if you have any real hills/mountains to go over regularly (I have a cooler on my SHO that I tow up to 1000 pounds with, and I live in Illinois where a "mountain" is about 100 feet tall!) :)
A transmission fluid flush and fill before towing and every two years is good advice also. I like synthetic ATF, but if you don't stress it a lot, then quality manufacturer recommended fluids will do fine.
