QuestionI am a off-roader (Jeep Cherokee).
I am contemplating buying/using a tow dolly (Stehl Tow) to tow my 4.5" Lifted Jeep (auto transmission) with 32" TIRES to offroad events (from Virginia to Pennsylvania typically).
In past I have driven it to and from events but am now nervous about breaking something and getting stranded out of state after too aggressively affording! I know a flat bed trailer is a better solution but not with my current tow vehicle (99 Ford Explorer with 5.0 L V8 auto transmission.
Can i realistic tow it distances on dolly? If I understand right, would I BACK it onto dolly? Of put front wheels on it with transfer case in neutral and transmission in PARK?
I would be upgrading to electric trailer brakes without doubt!
THANKS IN ADVANCE!
AnswerMark,
Unless you have really gone to work stripping the Cherokee, I am going to assume that it now outweighs the Explorer. In which case I cannot, in good conscience, give you any advise on dolly towing the Cherokee with the Explorer.
You would need a larger tow vehicle or a lighter off-roader to tow it in what I would consider a safe manner. The other option would be a light tandem axle car hauler trailer with brakes on all four wheels. As long as you can keep the package light and use a weight distributing setup, I think you could pull it off.
