Towing Issues: towing dinghy, jeep manual, jeep liberty

I have a 2003 Jeep Liberty 4x4 Auto, when I
bought it I was assured that it would
1. Be flat towable- It is
2. Would not accrue mileage while being towed
  that so far haS PROVED UNTRUE.

Is there some thing that I am mising when hooking up. I follow all instructions in the Jeep manual and everything works except it accrues mileage.

any advice would be appreciated.

Although this is a problem on some cars, the Liberty should not gather miles while being flat towed.

Ensure you are putting the key in the 'Off/Unlock' position.  It should be something like:
ACC : Locked : Off/Unlock : Run : Start

ACC may be in the middle rather tuning back, I can't quite remember in the Liberty.

Also, there may be another click between Off.Unlock and Run.  This may be where you have the key.  I would lock the steering with the key and then just turn it forward the one click so the steering unlocks.
